In the world of the future natural stocks of Earth are exhausted, but the new power source which production is capable to solve all problems of mankind is found. The mineral necessary for people is got on a far-out planet Pandora by forces of large corporation. Locals aren't glad to invasion of people of Earth, after all expansion of production of a mineral threatens with danger of their civilization.

Scientists develop the special project: they create avatars – artificial hybrid organisms in which genes of people are combined with genes of natives of Pandora. Avatars will help scientists to take root into society of inhabitants of Pandora and it is better to study them, and the corporation supports this project, seeing in it own benefit.

For management of an avatar it is necessary to possess DNA which served for creation of an organism. One of scientists who avatar had to operate, perishes, but scientists find a way out: the twin brother of the dead, Jake Sallie serving in marines and as a result of accident sat down in a wheelchair, possesses the same DNA.
In the 22nd century, a paraplegic Marine is dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission, but becomes torn between following orders and protecting an alien civilization.
