The young girl Bella Brown suffers from fear of open space and incredible aspiration to an order therefore prefers to live in isolation. Most of all she dreams to become a writer and to publish books for children, but so far Bella is compelled to work in library and to do everything possible for implementation of the dream.

She never reflected that such fantastic love and where to find it, but certain events will change Bella's life and lives of the people surrounding it. The world around throws down a challenge to the girl, compelling it to start working. Bella needs to put the garden in order differently to her eviction threatens. But to begin work in a garden with it it is necessary to leave a habitual zone of comfort, to face neighbors and to learn to communicate.

After she is forced by her landlord to deal with her neglected garden or face eviction, she meets her match, nemesis, and unlikely mentor in Alfie Stephenson, a grumpy, loveless, old man who lives next door who happens to be an amazing horticulturalist.
