After The Ruin only one person has all the memories and he is known as the Receive of Memory. He is suppose to guide Chief Elder and other in the community while taking any important decisions. Jonas, Asher and Fiona are about to graduate from school and Jonas is very anxious about his future career assignment. On the day of graduation every student is assigned with a particular career but Jonas is not assigned with anything.
Jonas gets upset but soon he realizes that he is going to be the next person to be assigned the duties of Receiver of Memories. The present Receiver of Memories becomes the Giver. After assigning the roles of The Receiver, Jonas gets information about the past. He comes to know about Rosemary who was earlier Receiver but could not keep up the the past and finished her own life. The nature of Receiver is mysterious. While learning so many things, he shares them with his friend Fiona.
In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world.
