Greg Gaines is a teen studying his high school senior in Pittsburgh. The name of his college is Scehnley High School. Greg is self-obsessed, awkWard and lanky kind of guy. He is happy with his friends and groups in the college. He comes to know about Rachel Kushnar who happens to be his friend in childhood, is suffering from leukemia.
Rachel is also studying in the same college with Greg. Greg’s parents ask him to meet Rachel and be nice to her in her hard times. Rachel is not very keen to meet Greg and nor Greg is happy to see her but they have to talk a bit as they meet. Greg starts talking about her pillow collection she made in childhood, Rachel feels happy as he remembers some things about her. They end up being good friends and decide to meet regularly. Meanwhile Greg takes Earl along with him while he is going to meet Rachel.
Greg is coasting through senior year of high school as anonymously as possible, avoiding social interactions like the plague while secretly making spirited, bizarre films with Earl, his only friend. But both his anonymity and friendship threaten to unravel when his mother forces him to befriend a classmate with leukemia.
